SOUTH CHICAGO ARA ALERT (ANTI-RACIST ACTION) uly 10,1998 A new chapter of ARA was begun May 16th. Chicagoland is notorious for its segregated, racist history. The south side and suburbs have always been plagued by an ignorant, abusive and at times violent atmosphere. Determined folks have decided we have had enough and have decided to organize against this disgrace and expose this menace with direct action, armed with the studied fruth. We will look into and report on racist situations from around the Chicagoland area, with a particular emphasis on the southside of Chicago and the south suburbs. We’re going to battle ignorance and hate with brotherhood, sisterhood and insightfulness. Racism goes way beyond the bonehead mentality of the nazis and klansters. Although these creeps must be exposed, it is the suit and tie gang who manipulate their strings, that must ultimately be stopped. The history of this country is one of slavery, horrible sexism, racism, genocide and sexual repression. Although rarely acknowledged, we are products of our history and this begins to explain why our society is so degraded by white racism. Let’s go beyond the simple explanations and papered-over “solufions." WE MUST FIGHT RACISM! Soulh Chicago ARA p. 0. box 721, Homewood, IL 60430 ara_s_side@hotmail.com

South Chicago ARA A new ARA (Antfi-Racist Action) was started on May 16th, with an organizing meeting held at the Blue Island library. The meeling consisted of a diverse group of six people who are determined fo challenge the bonehead racist atmosphere in this area. Ideas were discussed as to how we can best go about challenging the growing degeneration into overt racist behavior and nazi “thinking” that is all around us. This brief newslelter is the beginning. A student at Brother Rice brought a sense of urgency, which began our work. As we all know, Brother Rice is plagued by a parficularly bad atmosphere, racially. It is the school where the uniquely degraded “Buckwheat” incident and brawl occurred as their school basketball team hosted Thorntan, a few months back. The “counselling” did little to deter a core of racist bullies from continuing their anti-human behavior. This sordid story will be further looked into. Students must organize to fight for racial justice, open respect and human dignity. A courageous and articulate lady told of the bad goings-on where she works (St. Xavier College.) Belligerent racist students are harassing hispanic students there. These people must be challenged and stopped to create a human environment that is not degraded by such racist filth. An enormous amount of education and direct action must be begun o challenge and overcome this most basic social scourge. Eceal
Pl LG LLAINUE 3 On June 20ih. the second South Chicago ARA meeting was held al Ihe Blue Island Library. Six new members joined in on fhe discussions, representing a wide range of communifies. People from Chicago. Alsip and Willow Springs joined earlier members from Blue sland, Oak Lawn and Monee. We folked about our plans which include having a literature fable and altemaive stage al the Blue Islond Festival in the Park, fo be held July 11th and 12th. We also falked about participating in the ARA four fo be held at the United Center on July 16th. Plans for a benefit concert fo be held in Homewood at Off the Alley in early August were discussed. We also falked about working on this newsletier. Our next meefing was defermined fo be scheduled for August Ist at Ihe Blue Islond Library from 3 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. Information packets were handed out, ideas fosses around, recent evenls such os he march and rally fo advocate for public housing. and to profest cily govemment heavy-handedness as fo the Cabrini demolitions and forced relocations, in which ARA members parficipated, were recounted. The important ongoing Black Radical Congress was discussed. Also the ARA convention fo be held in Columbus in October was brought up. Some of us will go there and parficipale, and even conduct a workshop. New members discussed the problems racists are causing in their communifes. It is the same ignorant broken record. Racist bulies are preying on young people of color and fhose who associate with them. ’ These nazi wannabes Ihreaten and aftack people who they can manage fo isolate and outnumber. There is nofhing positive these creeps ever offer. They’re human cockroaches, who degrade our fowns and menace our sireels. After this meeting, several of us went on a clean-up. Nozi scrawlings and garbage had been strewn about a party spof of huge concrete chunks, located off a path in the woods by the Cal- Sag Chonnel. in Blue Isiand. This is a polluted industrial site, where the Chicago Gas Lamp Monlle Company used fo operate from. Itis focated on ther north side of the Channel, west of Ann st. at approximately 132nd sireet. Brainless nazi and hate-filed graffitti was painted over. All lhe garbage was cleaned up. We decided o put positive, life-affiming messages in their place. We wrote things like "ARA." “EQUALITY." and symbols such as the peace symbol, the symbol represenling women (ond fife) and an "E" with a circle around it, symbolizing respect for the environment. The amosphere has been fofall lransformed from an offensive, hreatening, ignorant and wosled area to an enlightened. positive spot offering hope and respect for human ffe. Airport land s In response to the editorial on April 1 about the airport, I would say the real beneficiaries of the city’s efforts to block the Peotone plan are the forest pre- serves, Monee Reservoir, the surround- ing towns and the people who live there. This is not open space, ripe for exploitation, but rather, legitimately cared for land. It is maintained in an environmentally respectful manner. Some people earn their livelihood from this land and have for generations. We should think about how the govern- ment forced the Native American peo- ple off their land. First the Indians and now the farmers and homesteaders. Who will be the next victims? Supposedly this is being done for the “public good.” Well, I know what is good for me — seeing politicians who pro- mote dumb ideas being fired by their constituents. Michael W. FROM PEOTONE TO CABRINI - STOP FORCED RELOCATION The state is trying to bulldoze homes and farms for an unwanted, unneeded airport and tollroad down in Will County. Meanwhile, the city is bulldozing housing and evicting citizens, living in Chicago. The tax dollars wasted on these boondoggle construction projects are sorely needed to rebuild communities, create affordable housing, genuine health care, useful jobs, legitimate education and improve local transportation needs! The bulldoze and pave over the farmlands agenda of land speculators and powerful construction firms lowers the quality of the residents lives, just as the city is doing to the citizens of color, creating more homelessness, so that the land can be “redeveloped.” Forced evictions without the input of affected citizens is wrong and must be stopped by a united coalition of similarly beseiged grassroots groups! Smart growth alternatives, such as improving existing infrastructure, strengthening the freight systems, support for the agricultural sector and protecting regional open-space assets are being proposed. This Citizen’s Plan provides for useful projects, needed by citizens, from our tax dollars. ’STAND (Shut This Airport Nightmare Down) p.o. box 433, Monee, IL 60449 ‘South Chicago ARA (Anti-Racist Action) p.o. box 721, Homewood, IL 60430

SOUTH CHICAGO ARA ALERT
(ANTI-RACIST ACTION)

uly 10,1998

A new chapter of ARA was begun May 16th.
Chicagoland is notorious for its segregated, racist
history. The south side and suburbs have always been
plagued by an ignorant, abusive and at times violent
atmosphere. Determined folks have decided we
have had enough and have decided to organize
against this disgrace and expose this menace with
direct action, armed with the studied fruth.

We will look into and report on racist situations
from around the Chicagoland area, with a particular
emphasis on the southside of Chicago and the south
suburbs. We're going to battle ignorance and hate
with brotherhood, sisterhood and insightfulness.

Racism goes way beyond the bonehead
mentality of the nazis and klansters. Although these
creeps must be exposed, it is the suit and tie gang
who manipulate their strings, that must ultimately be
stopped. The history of this country is one of slavery,
horrible sexism, racism, genocide and sexual
repression. Although rarely acknowledged, we are
products of our history and this begins to explain why
our society is so degraded by white racism.

Let's go beyond the simple explanations and

papered-over “solufions." WE MUST FIGHT RACISM!

The ARA Conference has grown into the largest, most
important and most fun gathering of activists in Morth America.

meantime, mark these dates on your calendar and look forvard to one
of the mest inspiring and memorable veekends of your life.

THE FOUR PRINCIPLES OF THE ANTHRACIST ACTION NETWORK (ARA-NET)

1) We go where they go. Whenever fascisls are organizing or aclive
in public wa're there. We don'l believe In ignoring them or slaying away
from them. Never let the nazis have the slreels.

2) Don't rely on the cops or the courls to do our work. This
doesn't mean we don'l ever go lo courl. Bul we must rely on ourselves lo
prolect and 1o slop the fascisls.

3) Non-sectarlan defense of other anti-fascists. In ARANET, we
have lols of groups and individuals. We don't agree aboul everylhing,
we have a right 1o differ openly. Bul in this movement an aliack on one
s an allack on us all. We stand behind each other.

4) ARA-NET Intends 1o do the hard work necessary to build a
broad, strong movement against raclsm, sexism, anti-
Semitism, homophobia, discrimination against the disabled,
the oldest, the youngest, ard the weakesl of our peopl

TRUTH, FREEDOM & BROTHERHOOD

South Chicago ARA

A new ARA (Antfi-Racist Action) was started on
May 16th, with an organizing meeting held at the Blue
Island library. The meeling consisted of a diverse
group of six people who are determined fo challenge
the bonehead racist atmosphere in this area. Ideas
were discussed as to how we can best go about
challenging the growing degeneration into overt
racist behavior and nazi “thinking” that is all around
us. This brief newslelter is the beginning.

A student at Brother Rice brought a sense of
urgency, which began our work. As we all know,
Brother Rice is plagued by a parficularly bad
atmosphere, racially. It is the school where the
uniquely degraded “Buckwheat” incident and brawl
occurred as their school basketball team hosted
Thorntan, a few months back. The “counselling” did
little to deter a core of racist bullies from continuing
their anti-human behavior. This sordid story will be
further looked into. Students must organize to fight
for racial justice, open respect and human dignity.

A courageous and articulate lady told of the bad
goings-on where she works (St. Xavier College.)
Belligerent racist students are harassing hispanic
students there. These people must be challenged
and stopped to create a human environment that is
not degraded by such racist filth. An enormous
amount of education and direct action must be

begun o challenge and overcome this most basic
social scourge.

On June 20ih. the second South Chicago ARA meeting was held
al Ihe Blue Island Library. Six new members joined in on fhe
discussions, representing a wide range of communifies. People from
Chicago. Alsip and Willow Springs joined earlier members from Blue
sland, Oak Lawn and Monee.

We folked about our plans which include having a literature fable
and altemaive stage al the Blue Islond Festival in the Park, fo be
held July 11th and 12th. We also falked about participating in the
ARA four fo be held at the United Center on July 16th. Plans for a
benefit concert fo be held in Homewood at Off the Alley in early
August were discussed. We also falked about working on this
newsletier. Our next meefing was defermined fo be scheduled for
August Ist at Ihe Blue Islond Library from 3 p.m. until 4:45 p.m.

Information packets were handed out, ideas fosses around,
recent evenls such os he march and rally fo advocate for public
housing. and to profest cily govemment heavy-handedness as fo
the Cabrini demolitions and forced relocations, in which ARA
members parficipated, were recounted. The important ongoing
Black Radical Congress was discussed. Also the ARA convention fo
be held in Columbus in October was brought up. Some of us will go
there and parficipale, and even conduct a workshop.

New members discussed the problems racists are causing in their
communifes. It is the same ignorant broken record. Racist bulies
are preying on young people of color and fhose who associate with
them. ' These nazi wannabes Ihreaten and aftack people who they
can manage fo isolate and outnumber. They plague all
communiies in which they subsist, and recnit alienated individuals
‘wilh promises of acceptance, only o feach them infolerance and
thuggery. which i Iheir only offering. There is nofhing positive these
creeps ever offer. They're human cockroaches, who degrade our
fowns and menace our sireels.

After this meeting, several of us went on a clean-up. Nozi
scrawlings and garbage had been strewn about a party spof of
huge concrete chunks, located off a path in the woods by the Cal-
Sag Chonnel. in Blue Isiand. This is a polluted industrial site, where
the Chicago Gas Lamp Monlle Company used fo operate from. Itis
focated on ther north side of the Channel, west of Ann st. at
approximately 132nd sireet. Brainless nazi and hate-filed graffitti
was painted over. All lhe garbage was cleaned up. We decided o
put positive, life-affiming messages in their place. We wrote things
like "ARA." “EQUALITY." and symbols such as the peace symbol, the
symbol represenling women (ond fife) and an "E" with a circle
around it, symbolizing respect for the environment. The amosphere
has been fofall lransformed from an offensive, hreatening,
ignorant and wosled area to an enlightened. positive spot offering
hope and respect for human ffe. Dignity or vilenessz?2 You choose.

Dear activists i the ani

acist movement, 37

1 would like t0 begin a discussion on the destruction of stavery and the.
imporance of the black soldir. Tve read several books and | would ke 1o hear some.
‘comments. 1 thought ARA would benefi by reading the presenation | gave 10 my union.
We are a muliracial nion tha i sometimes very motivated fo social causes.

We live ina time when most people take things for granied. Even the founding of
‘our union many take lightly. We werer thee forthe fight. We didn' see the 10
steelworkers murdered by the Chicago police on Avenue “0” in 1937,

‘We werent there to strike for the hour day. We didt see the excution by
hanging of the executive board in 1586,

We wereni there 10 suffer 4 years of bloodshed during the Civil War. Was your
brother one of the 30,000 Black soldicrs killed inthe fghting? There were al totaled
180,000 black soldicrs who served in the Union

‘We should honor these heroes and martyrs who gave us their lives for the
bentement of humanity. We should honor al the people who struggled against slavery.
This is Black History Monih.

One o the most imporant figures was Frederick Douglass. Who was be? What
‘made him the best known spokesman fo ending slavery?
His contibutions were:
1. for 16 yéars was cditor forthe North Siar. The paper was supported and
financially backed by abolinists st home and broad
2. aveled 10 lreland and England twice o tlk sbout th desirucion of shvery
3. Met President Lincoln nd several ther presidents givin advice.

5. prominent male supporter for women's sulage. (rght 0 vote)

A dozen yars before the Civil War broke out Douglass began priting the North
Star. In the very frst edition in bold headlines he declared RIGHT 1S OF NO SEX.
TRUTH IS OF NO COLOR. His paper received lots o national and itermational
support. In fact the paper wouldnt have survived without strong financial suppor.

1 the paper he constanily alked sbout how the nation and the slave were bound
ogether. When wa broke ou, he had clesr message. The North must hate slavery and
the tave holders 1o win thenext bate. Boldly h prnied two esoluions for ending he

war: 1) Abolish Slavery and 2. Form a Liberating Army of the ex-staves. They will
ight beterthan anyone can believe.

He also gave us a world wide perspective of the civil war, He said that this s
war the worldis waiching. "We mststand in our appoinied place and do this great
service for mankind. “The world has not seen a nobler and grander war than that

which the loyal people of this couniry are now waging...not mearly o free a couniry or a
continent... ut the whole world rom slavery.”

1 was nerly 2 yearsffom the sart of the war when Prsident Lincoln gave the
‘emancipation proclamation. 1t was celebrated a a gorious day in the abolition
movement...Jan 1, 1863. The sbolitonists had always talked about how the fae of he -
nation and slavery were bound together* For th frs time, black freedom and cquality

I the spring of 1863, he went on a speaking tour wging blacks to "Ny to s, and

Before emancipation Douglass had lot o say incrticism of Lincol and the
government. He sid they were blind. The issue was slavery and they didat want 1o deal
with it He said many times why does the Union fight with s white hand and keep s
black hand tied. Al of thischanged because the North necded the black soldier o win
the war.

In the summer of 1863, Frederick Douglass obiained a meeting with Presideat
Lincoln. He brought with i thiee grevances from the Black soldiers. There had been
massacre of unarmed black soldiers at FortPillow who had suendered. He wanied a
statement of equal retalition of Confederae prisoners that would be made for every
black soldier murdered in such ashion. The second issue was the denial of commissions
of blacks. No black soldier was allowed (o be an office and this iscrimination was

‘Two Societies’

'HIRTY YEARS AGO, THE
Kerner Commission on Civ-
il Disorders warned: *Our pa-

tion is moving toward two soci-

eties,one biack, one while—
separate and unequal.” A 30th-
anniversary update, prepared
by the Eisenhower Foundation
and due for release March 1,
identifies some progress since
1968, but concludes that the
“prophecy has come to pass.”
Some evidence:

The unemployment rate for

‘young men in inner cities is
‘over 30 percent; the national
rate is under 5 percent.

W The U.S. income gap has
widened to the point that the
top 1 percent of Americans
have more wealth than the bot-
tom 90 percent. The poor are
disproportionately African-
American and Hispanic.

™ Ove in three young black
men s in prison, on probation
or on parole.

W States now spend more per
year on prisons than on high-
‘er education. Ten years ago the
spending priorities were

Airport land s

In response to the editorial on April 1
about the airport, I would say the real
beneficiaries of the city’s efforts to block
the Peotone plan are the forest pre-
serves, Monee Reservoir, the surround-
ing towns and the people who live there.

This is not open space, ripe for
exploitation, but rather, legitimately
cared for land. It is maintained in an
environmentally respectful manner.
Some people earn their livelihood from
this land and have for generations. We
should think about how the govern-
ment forced the Native American peo-
ple off their land. First the Indians and
now the farmers and homesteaders.
Who will be the next victims?

Supposedly this is being done for the
“public good.” Well, I know what is good
for me — seeing politicians who pro-
mote dumb ideas being fired by their
constituents.

FROM PEOTONE TO CABRINI - STOP FORCED RELOCATION

The state is trying to bulldoze homes and farms
for an unwanted, unneeded airport and tollroad
down in Will County. Meanwhile, the city is
bulldozing housing and evicting citizens, living in
Chicago.

The tax dollars wasted on these boondoggle
construction projects are sorely needed to rebuild
communities, create affordable housing, genuine
health care, useful jobs, legitimate education and
improve local transportation needs!

The bulldoze and pave over the farmlands agenda
of land speculators and powerful construction firms
lowers the quality of the residents lives, just as the
city is doing to the citizens of color, creating more
homelessness, so that the land can be “redeveloped.”

Forced evictions without the input of affected
citizens is wrong and must be stopped by a united
coalition of similarly beseiged grassroots groups!

Smart growth alternatives, such as improving
existing infrastructure, strengthening the freight
systems, support for the agricultural sector and
protecting regional open-space assets are being
proposed. This Citizen's Plan provides for useful

projects, needed by citizens, from our tax dollars.
